OSCE warns that ammunition depots in Transnistria pose serious environmental threats

Moldova, Ukraine and Belarus are facing serious environmental risks, according to an OSCE assessment report titled “Environment and Security: Transforming Risks Into Cooperation”, published this week in Prague. The report shows that Moldova has to resolve the issue of the military heritage consisting of 20,000 tons of arms and ammunition stored in Cobasna, the Transnistrian region, and which cannot be transported. The authors of the report warn that a potential explosion of this ammunition could lead to a humanitarian and environmental disaster. In Ukraine, nearly 2.5 million tons of arms, ammunition and military waste inherited from the USSR are abandoned, and four depots are sources of radioactive waste. The most serious environmental issue in Belarus is disposing of arms and ammunition, including toxic waste inherited from the former USSR, the report reads. In all those three ex-Soviet states, according to the Report “Environment and Security: Transforming Risks Into Cooperation”, toxic waste is also a very concerning issue.
