OSCE promotes environmental cooperation across Nistru River

Members of Moldovan and Transnistrian expert working groups on agriculture and ecology and representatives of nongovernmental organizations from both banks of the River Nistru discussed environmental cooperation during a meeting held by the OSCE Mission to Moldova on March 29, Info-Prim Neo reports. According to a communique from the OSCE Mission, the event, held in the town of Vadul lui Voda near Chisinau, is part of the Mission’s efforts to build confidence between the sides in the Transnistrian conflict. Participants discussed matters related to the disposal of obsolete and dangerous pesticides, a meeting of the Aarhus Convention to be held in Chisinau in the summer and opportunities for joint environment-related work. “We are pleased to be able to help the sides find ways to cooperate to protect the people of the region,” said Ambassador Philip Remler, the Head of the OSCE Mission to Moldova. Participants in the roundtable meeting discussed the fourth Session of the Meeting of the Parties to the Convention on Access to Information, Public Participation in Decision Making and Access to Justice in Environmental Matters (Aarhus Convention) and associated preparatory meetings, to be held June 29 to July 1 in Chisinau. Up to 350 representatives of the 52 states signatory to the convention will attend the session.
