OSCE PA welcomes election of Moldovan President
OSCE Parliamentary Assembly President Petros Efthymiou applauded the Parliament of the Republic of Moldova for its democratic election of a President after a political stalemate of more than two years and a half, Info-Prim Neo reports, quoting a press release from the organization.
Over the years, in meetings with colleagues from the Moldovan Parliament, the Assembly has encouraged a solution to this political crisis, including through visits from the Assembly’s Parliamentary Team on Moldova. “We look forward to working with the new leadership in Chisinau, as well as Tiraspol, in close co-operation with the OSCE Mission to Moldova and the Delegation of Moldova to the OSCE PA,” said Walburga Habsburg Douglas, chair of the Parliamentary Team on Moldova.
President Dalia Grybauskaitė extended congratulations to President-elect Nicolae Timofti. In a press statement, she underlined that Lithuania had always supported and would continue to support Moldova's efforts to implement reforms and to ensure security, stability and prosperity for its citizens.
“I would like to assure you that Lithuania remains fully committed to your country's endeavors towards integration into Europe,” the President wrote in her message of congratulations. She wished the newly elected Moldovan leader much success and wisdom in working for the common good and security of all the people of Moldova.
On March 16, the Parliament elected Nicolae Timofti as President of Moldova by 62 votes. The Communist parliamentary group boycotted the election.
