OSCE PA President pleads for more active involvement in settling the Transnistrian dispute
President of the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly Goran Lennmarker pleads for a more active involvement of the OSCE PA in the settlement process of the Transnistrian dispute. He made this statement at a meeting with Speaker of the Parliament Marian Lupu held on Wednesday, May 16.
Lennmarker has reconfirmed the support of OSCE for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Moldova.
As Member of the Swedish Parliament, Goran Lennmarker remarked the high interest Sweden attaches to the development of the social-economic and political situation in Moldova. He emphasised that Sweden supports the European aspiration of Moldova and believes that Moldova should turn the status of European country to good account.
For his part, the Moldovan Speaker stressed that a solution to the settlement of the Transnistrian conflict can be identified solely within the frameworks of the 5+2 negotiation format. “Moldova wants to identify a real and lasting solution to the Transnistrian dispute, and the participation of international actors in the debates is essential”, the official said. At the same time, Lupu pleaded in favour of replacing the present peacekeeping mechanism in the Transnistrian region with an international mission of civil and military observers.
In adittion, Lupu reiterated the conscious and irreversible choice of Moldova in what concerns the European integration. “The European aspiration of Moldova is not just the choice of the Moldovan politicians, but first of all of the population”, the Speaker added.
During his visit to Moldova, Lenmarker will hold meetings with President Vladimir Voronin, with the leaders of the parliamentary parties and leaders of the factions, with the Minister of Foreign Affairs; on Friday he will visit Tiraspol.
