Orphans in Telenesti cook and sew to avoid ending up starved and naked
Ten youths in the Telenesti Placement Cebter have to cook and sew so that they don’t end up starved and naked. On the eve of September 1, they have no clothing or footwear.
The institution’s director Viorica Vicol told Info-Prim Neo that the placement center was for young people aged between 16 and 25. They are orphans or come from single parent families and become beneficiaries of the institution after finishing their boarding studies. They receive an allotment of 640 lei from the local budget, but this is insufficient for the youth’s upkeep.
“Last year, 11 young people were enrolled by contract at a vocational school where they learned the job of a cook. Each contract cost 2000 lei and the money was donated by sponsors. Unfortunately, this year we don’t have the money to enroll the youth in such courses”, declared the institution’s director.
For food, each youth gets 15 lei daily, which isn’t enough for three meals. In this situation, the administration of the institution decided the orphans should cook their own food. Some of the products are bought from the allotted money and vegetables are grown in the garden of the placement center. After the young people finish their training and reach the age when they have to leave the placement center, the administration helps them find a job.
The situation of children in family-type homes is better. According to the senior specialist in issues related to respecting child’s rights Petru Gojan, the Telenesti District Council allots a yearly one-time payment of 3000 lei, a monthly allowance of 450 lei and covers the family’s expenses for 30 kWh of electric energy. There are 52 children in family-type homes in this district. Six other children are placed in foster care in three families.
