Officers of the National Anticorruption Center (NAC) carried out searches at the home of a deputy mayor of Orhei, in a case of illegal financing of the election campaign for the position of Bashkan of Gagauzia. He was appointed treasurer in the campaign of a contestant who ran in the 2023 elections held in Gagauzia, IPN reports.

The criminal case was started over violation of the management of electoral funds, illegal financing of election contestants, forgery of documents and statements. According to the NAC, the person responsible for the financial activity of the election contestant, currently deputy mayor of Orhei municipality, allegedly produced a number of forms in which he introduced false data on cash donations made by individuals in favor of the contestant. The forms were signed by him and submitted to a financial institution, as well as to the Central Election Commission of Gagauzia, as authentic, as documents confirming the source of the money.

In these circumstances, the bank account of the election contestant was supplemented with 370,000 lei from sources prohibited by law. The money was later used to purchase goods and pay taxes and services related to the election campaign.

The criminal investigation measure continue and the person will be questioned as a suspect.
