Orange advisory for cold weather and blizzards

Meteorologists have issued an orange warning of a sudden change in weather for January 7-10. There will be precipitation in the form of rain that will turn into sleet and snow. Heavy snowfalls (15-20 l/m2) are forecast for next Monday, IPN reports.

According to the State Weather Service, severe weather will be brought by a southern cyclone and a polar air mass that will pass close to the territory of the country. Thus, there will be whiteouts and blizzards in parts. Snowdrifts and ice will appear on roads. There is also a risk that hoarfrost will form on electrical wires and trees.

On January 7-9, the northwest wind will intensify to 15-20 meters per second. On January 8-10, the average daytime temperatures will drop by 10-15 degrees Celsius.

In connection with the weather warning, the General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations urges the people to avoid trips during blizzards and to inform themselves in advance about the accessibility of roads if the trip is absolutely necessary.

Rescuers urge the drivers to properly equip the vehicles so as to ensure safe travel in winter conditions. If driving is unavoidable, drivers must make sure they have antiskid chains, shovel, sand, and warm clothes in the trunk of their vehicle. They should make sure that the phone’s battery is charged, the reservoir is full and the vehicle’s heating system works efficiently.

In exceptional and high-risk situations, one should call the 112 Service.
