The leaders of the three Opposition parties that entered the new Parliament Friday had a meeting with the Secretary General of the Council of the European Union and the High Representative for the Common Foreign and Security Policy Javier Solana and presented to him proofs that the April 5 elections had been rigged and examples of mass violations of the human rights after the April 6-8 events, Info-Prim Neo reports. The Opposition met with the European official at his insistence, before the meeting with the outgoing President Vladimir Voronin. “We insisted on the fact that the April 5 elections had been fixed and provided evidence. We also presented proofs of the torture that followed after the April 7 events. We insistently asked for an international commission that would objectively investigate and assess the events taking place in Moldova,” the president of the Liberal Democratic Party Vlad Filat told the reporters after the meeting. The president of the Liberal Party Mihai Ghimpu said that the Opposition related how the power was stolen by rigging the elections and presented the proofs that they submitted earlier to the Constitutional Court. “We also showed a map with pictures and confessions of the people that were tortured and beaten and a video CD, where the police are caught throwing stones into the protesters,” Ghimpu said. The leaders of the three parties said they are pleased with the discussion they had with Javier Solana. “We understood that the EU is more concerned with the democracy in Moldova and Moldova’s integration into the EU than the Communist power,” Mihai Ghimpu said. “The most interesting fact is that all the European institutions are concerned and the presence of Mister Solana confirms this. Only the Communists do not look for a compromise solution to overcome the crisis situation. It seems as if they do not care about Moldova’s future,” said the leader of the Moldova Noastra Alliance Serafim Urecheanu. The representatives of the Opposition said that they felt no pressure on the part of the European officials into making them sit at the negating table with the power. “No pressure is exerted for the time being. We did not get along with the Communists in 2005 and will not get along now. We have a rather stable agreement with our partners, the three Liberal parties, and this time the Communists will not get that seat that they want to obtain to continue the dictatorship in Moldova,” Urecheanu said. The Opposition is decided not to participate in the election of the candidate that will be fielded by the Communist Party for the post of President of Moldova and this would lead to early elections. Javier Solana did not make statements for the press after the meeting with the Opposition parties. He will give a news conference after the meeting with the head of state, which started at 18.00.
