Opposition parties should learn lesson from election results in Rezina, political analyst says

Political analyst Arcadie Barbarosie believes Opposition parties should learn their lesson from the outcomes of the rerun elections in Rezina. Barbarosie told Info-Prim Neo that the right-wing parties had a better position after the June 3 elections and could have avoided repeat elections if they had reached a political consensus. In his words, the Communist Party won a comfortable majority on November 11 and will run the district in the next four years because the Opposition has apparently forgotten the saying “when two are fighting, the third will win”. PCRM also won due to the fact that many supporters of the non-communist forces didn’t show up for the polls. It is generally known that the pro-Communist electorate is much more disciplined. The political parties should not just fight to win votes but also to persuade the voters to turn up, Arcadie Barbarosie stressed. Following the general local elections on June 3, the Communists obtained 16 out of 33 seats in the Rezina District Council. Because the Council repeatedly failed to achieve quorum, it was disbanded. The new elections brought the Communists 18 seats, leaving the remaining 15 shared by six parties.
