Opinion leaders think imperious to re-consider journalistic ethics

Most of the Moldovan journalists make the game of political parties in power, what leads to not observing the ethical principles in doing their jobs. The finding was made at conference “The Moldovan journalists' power to contribute to fight corruption. The ethics' hidden variables”, Info-Prim Neo reports. According to the director of the Independent Press Association (IPA), Petru Macovei, the lack of clear ethical norms and of monitoring reduces the journalists' power to combat society's vices. In the opinion of the Moldovan Journalists Union (MJU) president, Valeriu Saharneanu, journalists violate the ethical norms because of being impelled by different circumstances. When the capacity of defense of the journalist within his/her organization is restricted, when the economic strength is weakened, the power of influence upon politics is also weak, the MJU president thinks. According to the president of the APEL Electronic Press Association, Alexandru Dorogan, representing the public's interest, the journalists are obliged to combat society's vices, yet they do not fulfill this obligation “because we have a closed and controlled society, but also a shy press.” In this respect, the IPA president, Petru Macovei, criticizes the Ethics National Committee for not monitoring how journalists observe the ethical principles. He opined the commission consisted of irrelevant people and suggested to elect new ones. The MJU president responded that the lack of money is the main cause why they do not monitoring. The conference unfolds on May 29 and 30, under the organization of MJU, within the Joint Project of the European Commission and the Council of Europe against corruption, money laundering and terrorism funding in Moldova.
