Open Government concept could be taught in schools
The concept and principles of Open Government could be included in the school curriculum. Pupils could study them during civic education lessons. The initiative comes from several NGOs and state agencies whose goal is to promote Open Government, based on spreading the practice of operating with free-access data.
In order to identify the steps to promote the program, the East-Europe Foundation, the CMB Training Center, the National Participatory Council (CNP) and the E-government/Open government Group organized a workshop on Wednesday, July 25, Info-Prim Neo reports.
According to specialists, the Open Government is a program meant to provide civil society with free access to as many public data and statistics, gathered from ministries. “We want to organize various trainings to promote Open Government and to implement mass information events in higher education institutions, because the majority of users of electronic networks are young people. Besides, we want to create a platform for civil society to come up with proposals and commentaries regarding the service delivery sphere in order to improve living standards”, said Veronica Cretu, moderator of the workshop.
“We already have a site date.gov.md, launched in April 2011, where we have published 400 data sets from different social spheres: education, finances, public administration, services, police and many others. By the end of 2012, we intend to publish another 26 sets, including baccalaureate statistics, the number of teachers, of pupils, of specializations, etc. “, said Irina Tisacova, coordinator of the initiative for an Open Government.
Ludmila Malai, program assistant at the East-European Foundation, said that the bodies gathered at the workshop wanted to create an environment in which more people could benefit from open data. “We want to explain to civil society that on the basis of open data businesses can be started, critical thinking can be developed and collaboration between state institutions can be strengthened”, said Ludmila Malai.
Promoting Open Government is one of the goals of the International Partnership for Open Government, which Moldova joined in August 2011. Moldova finds itself about the middle of the program’s development rankings.
