Only 58% of the centralized water supply systems function in Moldova

In 2006, out of 3021 centralized sources of water supply on the whole territory of Moldova only 58.2% have functioned normally, asserts the Ministry of Health. 36.7% of them didn’t correspond to the sanitary norms while 10% didn’t correspond to the hygiene requirements in terms of microbiological indicators. During the period, out of 111.7 thousand of functioning wells, 25% didn’t correspond to the sanitary norms in terms of microbiology. From all the samples collected from bodies of water across the country, like the Nistru River, Prut River and others, 42.2% didn’t correspond to the microbiological norms. The level of water pollution in the regions where wastewater is stored (treated and non-depurated) is very high, 54.9% of the samples not corresponding to the requirements. Sanitary doctors say that 9 in 10 kindergartens and schools don’t have conditions for washing hands with hot water, while only 59% of them have functioning water supply systems.
