Only 25% of librarians in Moldova have higher specialty training

Only 25% of the libraries in the Republic of Moldova have higher specialty training. A decreasing number of people chose the profession of librarian as this is old-fashioned. The data were presented in the fifth Forum of Researchers of the National System of Libraries, IPN reports.

The situation is better in the national libraries where 37% of the employees have higher specialty training, said Ludmila Corghenci, head of the Center of Continuous Formation in Bibliotechonomy and Information Sciences of the National Library. At the opposite pole, there are the public libraries where only 21% of the employees have higher education in bibliotechonomy. In libraries of education institutions, this indicator is at 24%, while in specialized libraries at 88%.

Ecaterina Dmitric, division head at the National Library, said fewer young people choose the profession of librarian as they consider it conservative and unfashionable. “I remain optimistic and consider the situation can be changed if we modify the paradigm of positioning on the platform of modern technologies. Namely the library personnel are those who will organize information services based on electronic resources and will be able to work with different types of databases, with electronic libraries and will distribute information at European and world levels,” stated Elena Dmitric.

“Even if I had experience of work in other areas, I remained devoted to the profession of librarian. The experience in other areas helped me realize my potential,” stated National Library director Elena Pintilei, president of the Association of Librarians of the Republic of Moldova.

The fifth Forum of Researchers of the National System of Libraries that was staged by the Ministry of Education, Culture and Research and the National Library in partnership with the Association of Librarians of the Republic of Moldova took place online on December 23, on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the establishment of bibliotechonomic education in the Republic of Moldova.

On January 1, 2019, there were 4,098 librarians in the Republic of Moldova.
