Only 1/5 of NGOs in Transnistria are active

The number of nongovernmental organizations in the Transnistrian region has been constant over the last three years. About 3,700 NGOs are registered there, but only one fifth of them work, 40 organizations being active constantly.

Contacted by IPN, the head of the Tiraspol Media Center Luiza Doroshchenko said the organizations are mainly functional only during the implementation of projects, when they have access to donor’s money. As they are not recognized on the right bank of the Nistru, they do not have much access to backers’ funds and the lion’s share always goes to the NGOs from the right bank. Even if they make themselves noticeable and win projects, the donors cannot send money to them through the Transnistrian banks because they are not recognized.

Luiza Doroshchenko considers that the only solution in such a situation is to establish partnerships between the NGOs from the two banks of the Nistru.

Another problem highlighted by Luiza Doroshchenko is the low level of transparency of the Transnistrian organizations. According to her, the situation in this field is much more serious than on the right bank of the Nistru. Through the agency of FHI360, the Tiraspol Media Center last year produced the first public report on the received funds. When they wanted to compare their situation with that of other organizations of the region they found no report.
