One-year-old admitted to hospital with tea scalds
A boy aged one year and four months was rushed to the hospital with tea scalds on the face and body in the middle of the night. He was admitted to the National Children’s Hospital “Emilian Cotaga” in Chisinau, the Burns Division’s head Gheorghe Vicol has told Info-Prim Neo.
The doctor said that the boy was in a state of shock. He has scalds on 10% of the body, mainly on the face, chest and hands. “The child will definitely remain with scars. Furthermore, he now experiences severe pains,” stated Gheorghe Vicol.
The child’s treatment will last for at least two-three weeks. “I was surprised when I saw that they brought the child at 1am. What did the parents do at that hour? Owing to the parents’ negligence and irresponsibility, the child may remain disabled for life,” said the doctor.
According to him, 80% of the children admitted to the Burns Division were scalded with hot tea or coffee from the cups left by parents in accessible places. “80% of the Division’s little patients wouldn’t have been here if the parents hadn’t left the cups with hot liquid on the edge of the table or the nightstand and wouldn’t have drunk tea with the child in the arms,” said Gheorghe Vicol. He also said that every time after such incidents he recommends the parents to be more attentive and not to expose their children to risks. Unfortunately, there are cases when the parents bring children in a state of shock after they are injured in similar situations.
According to a study carried out by REPEMOL Project within “A danger-free home for your child!” campaign, which analyzed the knowledge, attitudes and practices of the persons looking after children aged 0-5, 54.4% of the interviewed parents said that their children are not exposed to risks of being scalded or burned and only 38.2% said that such dangers exist.
