One-year-old admitted to hospital with palm burns caused by hot electric stove

A girl aged one suffered palm burns after she touched a hot electric stove when left without supervision by her mother for a moment. She was admitted to the National Clinical Hospital “Emilian Cotaga”, where she will receive treatment for 10 days. Burns Division head Gheorghe Vicol has told Info-Prim Neo that the burns are of medium gravity. The girl will preserve the mobility of the hand, but the situation could have been much worse. The doctor said the burns caused by hot surfaces, including the stove, iron, oven, and electric stove, are among the most often causes for which the children younger than five are hospitalized. With the weather growing colder, the parents should take additional measures to make sure that the children are protected from fire sources in the house, like heaters and stoves, as they can cause serious burns when touched. Gheorghe Vicol stated that the parents should know that the burns and scalds cannot be healed at home. “It is important that an ambulance be called. However, the first aid should be given at home, immediately. It is forbidden to put powder, oil, fat, cream or something else on the wound. The wound should be cooled with water for 5-20 minutes. The clothes should not be removed from the wound as they will be separated together with the burned skin and the wound will become deeper and more serious. Cold water should be poured over the child and the clothes,” stated the doctor. According to the Ministry of Health, 62 children under five died last year after suffering traumas and poisonings. Another over 2,300 were hospitalized. This means that six children become victims of home accidents daily. A child dies weekly for the same causes.
