One year after April 7
One year ago, on April 7, the young people staged a protest in the Great National Assembly Square in Chisinau against the results of the April 5 elections, declaring them rigged. The elections were won by the Communists Party (PCRM) that ruled the country for eight years. The peaceful protest that started on April 6 in the evening degenerated into a riot that resulted in dead and injured persons and the devastation of the Parliament Building and the Presidential Office.
Immediately after the elections, on April 6, the leader of the PLDM Vlad Filat said they will organize protests against the April 5 vote rigging in concert with the AMN and the PL.
More than 10,000 young people took to the streets on April 6 in the evening, gathering near the monument to Stephan the Great and Holy with lit candles. They declared April 6 a day of national mourning. The young people had chanted in front of the Presidential Office and the Parliament Building for about four hours. Afterward, they went to the central square and blocked the traffic. The leaders of the then Opposition joined them.
The protesters agreed to continue protesting on April 7 in the morning. During the first hours, the protests were peaceful, with the young people chanting anticommunist slogans. But in the afternoon, the crowd turned violent. The young people came in on altercations with the carabineers armed with shields. A part of them entered the Parliament and the Presidential Office and started to devastate them. The firefighting vehicle that came to disperse the crowd was set on fire. Meanwhile, the ambulances were transporting the injured protesters and police officers to the hospital.
After 4 P.M., the police started to shoot tear gas in front of the Parliament, casing powerful claps. For their part, the protesters threw Molotov cocktails at the Parliament. Smoke came out of the windows and the roof of the Parliament. Shortly afterward, two young men climbed onto the roof and hoisted the flags of the European Union and Romania.
At 5 P.M., the leaders of the then Opposition organized a meeting with the Head of Parliament Marian Lupu. The Opposition demanded that the administration refute publicly that they mobilized the young people in violent protests. The Government said it might be a coup.
Also then, the former head of state Vladimir Voronin said that the protests were organized and financed from outside, accusing Romania of direct involvement.
Towards midnight, the crowd dispersed. The last protesters were scattered by the police. Some of them were beaten and taken to police stations. Valeriu Boboc died on the night of April 8. Initially, the authorities said he got poisoned with an unidentified substance. After exhuming the body, a foreign medical examiner established that he died as a result of the head injuries he received.
