One third of Moldovans have never used Internet

36% of Moldova’s population, especially in rural areas, have never used the Internet, shows an IMAS (Marketing and Polling Institute) poll that covered a sample of about 1 000 respondents, Info-Prim Neo reports. The respondents were only from the right side of the Nistru and the survey results were used to adapt the essence of the Global Libraries program to the local particularities, launching thus the pilot stage of the project. According to the poll, 17% of the public libraries in Moldova are equipped with computers and only 11% have access to the Internet. Only 9% of those polled visit public libraries regularly. The libraries have limited resources of literature and equipment and limited possibilities of training the librarians. Among other problems is the outdated perception of the role and capacities of the public libraries among the public servants and the inappropriate infrastructure of these institutions. Within the pilot program Global Libraries that will be implemented during the next two years, about 60 public libraries of the country will be outfitted with computers and Internet access.
