One third of employed population works in public sector

Moldova’s labor force (active population aged 15 and over), which comprises the employed and unemployed persons, in the third quarter of this year was over 900,000. 30.9% of the employed population worked in the public sector, while 69.1% in the private sector or other forms of ownership, IPN reports, quoting the National Bureau of Statistics.

The employed population was 865,300. The men represented 50.9% of the employed population, while the women – 49.1%.

The average age of the people in work was 44.

The salary earners constituted 81.6% of the employed population, freelancers – 14.9%, while unpaid family workers – 3.1%.

The undeclared work among salary earners made up 6.4%, as opposed to 5.4% in the first quarter of 2022. Employment without individual employment contract (based on verbal agreements) is more frequent among men (9%) than among women (4%). The employees who worked based on verbal agreements in agriculture represented 52.4%, in the building sector – 15.4%, in trade – 6.7%.

The national unemployment rate was 5.5%, up 3% compared with the first quarter of 2022. The unemployment rate among men was 6.2%, among women – 4.9%, in urban areas – 4.9%, while in rural areas – 6.2%.
