One polling station for Romanian presidential impeachment referendum to open in Moldova

On May 19, Romanians from and outside the country will decide whether the suspended President Basescu will be dismissed or remain in office. Romanian authorities plan to open additional 181 polling stations in 94 countries across the world. Romania’s Government decided to supplement the number of polling places that will work at the diplomatic and consular missions of Romania to ease the access to voting. However, Moldova will have just one polling station. “We received messages that it would be welcome to open additional polling stations, besides those at embassies and consulates” Romania’s Foreign Minister Adrian Cioroianu said. He mentioned the opening of such stations at the honorary consulates in Spain and Italy, countries that will have 5 and 6 polling stations, respectively. Although the countries that host important Romanian communities will have from 3 to 6 polling places, while the USA – 21, the Romanians from the Republic of Moldova will be able to cast their votes in just one place – at Romania’s diplomatic mission in Chisinau.
