Each thirteenth road accident that occurred in 2006 in Chisinau, took the life of one person, on average. The EU mass media reports one casualty in 40 traffic accidents. According to the statistics from the Chisinau Traffic Police, 90 people died and other 1,511 got injured in the 1,207 road accidents that occurred in Chisinau last year. Inspector of the traffic security service of the Chisinau Traffic Police, Ion Roscovanu, told Info-Prim Neo that most of accidents happened in Rascani district – 281, resulted in 32 dead persons and 350 injured. It is followed by Botanica district - 257 accidents that killed 24 persons and injured other 334, Buiucani district - 252 accidents, taking 17 lives and injuring 336. In Centru district, 10 persons lost their lives and another 283 were injured in 246 accidents, while in Ciocana district - 171 accidents killed 17 persons and injured other 198. The largest number of accidents, 129, occurred in October, followed by September – 127, August – 117, November – 116 etc. As many as 185 accidents occurred on Thursdays, 184 – on Saturdays, 180 – on Sundays, 175 – on Fridays, 170 – on Wednesdays, 169 – on Tuesdays and 144 – on Mondays. The period from 4.00 pm to 6.00 pm, registering 182 accidents, turned out to be the most vulnerable period. It is followed by the ones between 6.00 pm and 8.00 with 146 accidents, 2.00 pm - 4.00 pm with 142 accidents, 12.00 - 2.00 pm with 128, Roscovanu says. The fewest accidents, 70, have happened between 6.00 am and 8.00 am. Pedestrians have been injured in 690 accidents. As many as 1014 accidents, or 90% of the total number, have occurred because of drivers. The main cause of the accidents (226 cases) is speeding, in 125 cases – ignorance of pedestrian crossing, 106 – non-observance of priorities, 88 – wrong manoeuvring, 71 – driving under the influence. The last two week’s deaths bring the number of casualties on Chisinau’s roads this year to a total of 8 and the number of injuries to 54, in 43 traffic accidents.
