The „National Geographic” magazine, one of the oldest and most prestigious magazines, will be published in Romanian, in Chisinau. It was launched on Friday, 2 June. „It would be a pity if Europe does not know further those two main values of Moldova – the extraordinary nature and special people”, state Romanian minister Dan Dumitriu stated at the launching of the magazine. He expressed concern about the fact that central authorities from Chisinau do not sufficiently promote these great values, but hoped that, from now on, Europeans will join the beauty of Moldova by means of the „National Geographic”. The editor-chief of the Romanian version of this magazine, Cristian Lascu, mentioned that the publications to come will be a permanent instructive presence in Moldova, as it is in other 119 countries of the world. The Magazine’s pablishing, according to Lascu, is due to American Association „National Geographic”. At the end of XIX century, it was exempted from taxes, and the available money was directed to publishing, starting 1888, of a magazine about nature, researches and scientific achievements of America. Since 1995 is published in other 29 languages than English, including Romanian. According to Cristian Lascu, the mother-magazine monitors from Washington all the editions in other languages in order to preserve magazine’s value and image. The Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources, Constantin Mihailescu, characterized launching of the magazine «National Geographic» as a leitmotiv of the actions dedicated to Environment Day, celebrated on 5 June. The minister confessed his satisfaction that the magazine will be present in Moldova as well, becoming a cognitive magazine for future ecologists and fans of nature and an editing base for scientific researches. „National Geographic” has 100 million readers worldwide and sponsors over 7,500 large projects, one of them being mirroring the migration history of humans.
