One in two Moldovans will soon use mobile services

The number of mobile telephony users increased in the first quarter of this year by 34.5% compared with the same period last year, and reached 1.418 million as of April 1. As a result, the mobile phone penetration rate has grown to 41.31%, based on a report of the National Regulatory Agency in Telecommunications and Informatics (NRATI). In the reported period, the Joint Stock Company “Moldtelecom” launched on the Moldovan mobile telephony market the “Unite” trademark, based on CDMA 2000 standard, on the 450 MHz frequency band. In April, the first mobile telephony operator has changed into “Orange Moldova”. According to the National Regulatory Agency in Telecommunications and Informatics, “Orange Moldova” connected to the network 40,400 new users, in Q1 of 2007, while “Moldcell” – 13,900, and “Unite” – 5,600 in a month. As of April 1, “Orange Moldova” had 914,700 users and “Moldcell” had 497,800. By the number of users, “Orange Moldova” owns 64.5% of the market, while “Moldcell” – 35.1% and “Unite” – 0.4%. The turnover of the mobile telephony operators increased by 33.7% against Q1 of 2006 and reached MDL 502.2 mln. “Orange Moldova” registered a turnover of MDL 356.1 mln, “Moldcell” - MDL 145.4 mln, and „Unite” – MDL 765,000. The monthly profit per user averaged MDL 120.6. In terms of turnover, market share of these companies was more than 70% for Orange, 28.9% for “Moldcell” and nearly 0.2% for “Unite”. The Agency forecasts that the 2007 turnover of the mobile telephony operators will have a higher growth rate than the rate of those providing fixed telephony services, and will top at the end of the year about MDL 2.5 billion. NRATI also predicts that investments in network developing will double, reaching MDL 800 mln.
