One in two Moldovans is willing to obtain Romanian citizenship – poll

48% of the respondents of Omnibus opinion poll conducted by the Marketing and Surveys Institute (IMAS) said that they would like to have Romanian citizenship, while 46% said they do not want it. At the same time, 1% said it has Romanian citizenship already. 85% of the questioned persons want the Romanian citizenship in order to have the possibility to move or work in the EU, 19% - to work or live in Romania, 14% - because they consider themselves Romanians, and 8% - because after January 1, 2007, it will be harder to obtain the Romanian citizenship. Also, 46% of the respondents consider that the accession of Romania to EU is a positive situation for Moldova, and 10% consider it negative. 26% did not answer the question, and 19% declared they have a neutral standpoint. At the same time, the recently launched Public Opinion Barometer shows that 10.4% of the respondents already have Romanian passports and another 17.9% submitted the necessary documents to be admitted to the Romanian citizenship. 40% of BOP respondents consider that the visa system introduced by Romania will affect them insignificantly. 16 and respectively 19% think that the visa regime will affect them to a greater or great extent.
