One in four Equality Council findings concerns employment discrimination

Almost a quarter of the findings issued by the Equality Council for the past year concern employment and labor discrimination. The most frequent violations include the denial of remote arrangements during the coronavirus pandemic, harassment in the workplace, denial of promotion, and arbitrary dismissal of people who have reached retirement age. The findings are contained in a report presented to Parliament.

In 22% of cases, discrimination was found in access to public services and goods. The report also shows cases where discrimination was related to one’s ethnic origin, spoken language, sexual orientation or religion.

Some major problems identified in the non-discrimination legislation include the failure to properly calculate the retirement pension of caregivers of people with severe disabilities;  failure to ensure reasonable accommodation for disabled participants in judicial proceedings; and the restricted number of beneficiaries entitled to fiscal and customs exemptions on imports of vehicles for people with disabilities.

In 2022, the Equality Council received 271 complaints, or 13% fewer than the previous year.
