One fourth of Moldova's land is in public ownership
Moldova has about 3.3 million hectares of land. One fourth of this land (782,500 hectares) is in public ownership. The farmland constitutes 73.9% of the total. 72.6% of the farmland is arable land, Info-Prim Neo reports, quoting the Land Cadaster.
The area of the farmland in 2009 increased by 23,100 hectares after the plots occupied by the constructions and annexes of the former agricultural units were taken out of the reserve stock. 80.3% of the about 2 million hectares of farmland are in the possession of land owners.
The area of the plots intended for the transport industry and other purposes grew by only 0.1% last year - up to 58,800 hectares.
Moldova consists of 32 districts, the Autonomous Territorial Unit of Gagauzia and the territorial-administrative units of Transnistria. There are 1,679 settlements and 978 mayors' offices.
