Oncological Institute to issue free 2,050 breast prostheses

This year, in accordance with the common mandatory health insurance program, women who remained without breast as a result of breast cancer will be issued free with 2,050 breast prostheses. The tender contest is over and the winning company is to deliver the prostheses to the Oncological Institute. Now the waiting list includes 1,400 patients, the medical institution said in a response to an inquiry made by IPN Agency.

A sum of 1.5 million lei was earmarked for purchasing the 2,050 breast prostheses. The women put on the waiting list will be informed about the distribution of the breast prostheses through the agency of their family doctors.

Last year, there were bought 1,600 breast prostheses for 1.4 million lei. In its response, the Oncological Institute said 1,505 female patients were provided with breast prostheses, 96 of whom received by two units for the reason that they underwent bilateral mastectomy.

A number of women who remained without breast as a result of breast cancer last February complained that after a month of the start of the distribution process they could not find prostheses of the suitable size. So, some of the women have been on the waiting list for over a year. Last September, officials in charge of the Oncological Institute said they were waiting for the new supply of prostheses. An order was placed after the previous store was used up.
