On verge of despair, elderly protest again in Chisinau

Driven to despair, a number of elderly again protested in front of the Moldovan Government on Tuesday, June 3. After the latest food price rises, pensioners fear they won't manage to survive with a pension of only 300 lei a month, Info-Prim Neo reports. Some 200 elderly have expressed their disagreement with the state's policy and complained of extremely small pensions. “May Voronin live at least one month with such money, so they we see how he can survive. He has said but lies till now,” said one of them. Th elderly also complain the apartment rent prices goes up day by day, the food products get more expensive, the medicines are not accessible for most of pensioners. “We don't have what to live on!”, “We ask the Communists to turn their faces to pensioners. Let them leave, if they cannot manage the country!” the elderly chanted. The meeting has been organized by the consumer protection NGO “Salvgardare”. Its leader, Maia Laguta, has said policemen dressed in civil inspected the neighborhood she lives in the night before, and on Tuesday morning the police tried to hinder her to go to the protest. She said the police arrested the driver of the car with the posters and loudspeaker prepared for the meeting. The same accusations were brought about by the same organizers of a similar protest on May 13. The police declined any involvement. Maia Laguta says they will organize protests on Tuesdays and Saturdays. The NGO Salvgardare was created in 2005 and declares itself as a defender of the consumers' rights.
