Ombudsmen seek special ballots for blind voters
The Centre for Human Rights requested the Central Election Committee to examine the possibility of providing blind voters with paper ballots printed in Braille.
In the Centre’s appeal to CEC, the Ombudsmen say they are aware of the fact that putting the proposal into practice would require additional expenses, yet nothing should obstruct disabled people, full and equal citizens of Moldova, from exercising their constitutional rights.
The Ombudsmen also requested the Broadcasting Coordination Council to ensure specific conditions for deaf people so that they could have the benefit of electoral debates on television. The Centre claimed the lack of sign language interpretation of televised electoral debates, which hinders these voters from evolving their opinion about a candidate.
The general local elections will be held on June 3, 2007.
