Ombudsman Mihail Cotorobai expresses his concern about the authorities’ intention to modify some of the provisions of the law on the regime of the state of emergency, siege or war, inclining about the ban on holding elections or referendums and on amending or abrogating laws in this period, IPN reports.
Mihail Cotorobai recommends the authorities to give up having the given amendments adopted and urges the MPs to reject the relevant proposals formulating by the Government.
According to the ombudsman, the given legislative proposal is inopportune and the possible consequences are dangerous for the rule of law, democracy, observance of human rights and fundamental freedoms in the Republic of Moldova. The states of emergency can be used as a reason or a pretext for suspending the rights and freedoms guaranteed by the country’s Constitution.
