Ombudsman makes call for civic responsibility and activism in elections

The observance of the right to elect and be elected is crucial for the establishment and maintaining of veritable democracy governed by the rule of law, said ombudsman Mihail Cotorobai. According to him, the holding of democratic elections is not possible if the human rights are not respected, in particular the freedom of expression and the freedom of the press, the freedom of assembly and association for political purposes.

In a public statement, Mihail Cotorobai said it is important for each voter to have the right to one vote that would have equal legal power. In this regard, the ombudsman called on the instructions involved in the organization of the elections to take measures and not allow electors to vote for several times in a number of places.

Mihail Cotorobai called upon the people to show civic responsibility and to take part in the parliamentary elections of February 24, while on the electoral contenders to show correctness and mutual respect and to refrain from actions that can affect the electoral exercise. He urged the election runners to abide by the democratic principles, regardless of the outcome of the February 24 elections, and not to allow their sympathizers to become involved in cases of violence and intimidation.
