Ombudsman for children’s rights suggests creating support services for families with children

The ombudsman for children’s rights Vasile Coroi expressed his concern about cases of death of children left without supervision, primarily during vacations. In this connection, he recommends the authorities to create easily accessible support services for families with children and to inform the population about the existence of such services, IPN reports.

In a press release posted on the Facebook page of the Office of the Ombudsperson for Children’s Rights, Vasile Coroi calls on the authorities to carry out activities that would prevent risks to the life and health of children for such reasons as: fires, drowning, road accidents, suffocation in overheated cars, poisoning, choking on small objects, electrocution and use of violence against children, and to strengthen the parents’ or carers’ capacities to support the development of children in safety, including to inform about the risk factors associated with the use of violence against children.

It is also recommended formally and informally teaching the children about the risks, forms of abuse, good and bad secrets, trustworthy persons and how to report abuses, and creating mechanisms for reporting cases of violence against children. The ombudsman recommends the employers to set up special spaces for children at the workplace of parents or carers, supervised by trained adults.

Vasile Coroi calls upon the media to contribute to informing the population about the risk and protection factors, including those associated with the use of violence against children and education about children’s rights, and urges the community to support the families with children when necessary and to inform the authorities when there is a risk to the life and health of children.

For their part, the parents and carers should supervise the children so as to reduce the risks of bodily injuries and death, to ask relatives, trustworthy persons or the public authorities to help so as not to leave the children unsupervised, and to establish a relationship of confidence with the children, to discuss the potential risks and protection methods with them.

The body of a seven-year-old girl was recently found in an abandoned house in Recea village of Râșcani district. The girl was at home alone and went to play in the neighborhood and didn’t return. After two days of searches, she was found strangled. The police arrested a local young man who is suspected of murdering the girl.
