Olesea Stamate: The intervention of politics in the judicial sector is regrettable

Former Justice Minister Olesea Stamate argues that it is regrettable that there is political intervention in the judiciary sector, referring to the fact that a Socialist MP took part in the General Assembly of Judges, and President Igor Dodon received some magistrates.

"We were accused of getting involved. We did not make interventions in the judicial sector. All we have said was that the judges of the Superior Council of Magistracy (CSM) should not be removed on the basis of a vote of no confidence by their fellow judges. All the more so as the decision was taken at an assembly that was manifestly held illegally and even lacked a quorum. This is what we said – without any intention of defending the current members of the CSM, or of interfering in some way in the judiciary”, said Olesea Stamate on " Secrets of power " show, Jurnal TV.

According to her, the Socialists did the exact opposite, favoring those judges who took certain illegal actions, giving them, in a way, a signal that "this is acceptable". "They were told: “So, now that you have our support, you can go ahead and do your job as before, as it is okay,'" the former minister stressed.

Further, Olesea Stamate maintains she wants to see the concept of justice reform proposed by the Socialists. "Initially, I thought that it was based on the concept we proposed - with the external vetting of judges and prosecutors. I do not know if this will be the chosen concept, but as long as politics is allowed to intervene in the process of justice, any reform will be questionable," continued the former minister.
