The Ministry of Youth and Sport designated weightlifter Oleg Sirghi and wrestler Emilia Budeanu as the best Moldovan athletes this year. Sirghi in 2013 became European champion and awardee at the World Universiade, while Budeanu won gold at the World Youth Championships and silver at the European Youth Championships. Boxer Dumitru Galagot, European vice champion and bronze medalist at the World Universiade, comes third in the rankings.
“This year I was also named the best by the Sports Press Association of Moldova. I will certainly drink a glass of champagne together with my friends and my coaches,” Oleg Sirghi stated for IPN.
At the Moldovan Sports Gala on December 20, the national rugby team, which suffered no defeat in 2013, was named the best team of the year. The national handball team, which won the Intercontinental Cup of small countries, became the surprise of the year.
Weightlifter Ecaterina Tretiacova was awarded the Talent of the Year prize for winning three golds at the European Cadets Championships and two silvers at European Youth Championships.
The best athletes with disabilities received money awards.
