Oleg Serebrian considers that noncommunist parties in CMC should accept PL leader’s chairmanship

The political parties unfoundedly criticize the intransigence of the Liberal Party (PL) as regards the aspirations of the PL leader to become chairman of the Chisinau Municipal Council (CMC), the president of the Social Liberal Party (PSL) Oleg Serebrian considers. At a news conference on Tuesday, Serebrian said that the PL follows the example of other parties that stick to the principle that the presidency of the district councils should belong to the party that obtained a relative majority. “If sticking to the principle that the presidency belongs to the ones that have by one more representative, it would be logical if Urecheanu and others accepted the candidacy of Mihai Ghimpu for the post of CMC chairman,” Oleg Serebrian said. The PSL president regretted the fact that coalitions appeared not in all the districts where the noncommunist forces polled a majority vote. Serebrian said that another reason would be the fact that the lists are not always supplemented with people that belong to the relevant political organizations. As a result, after elections the councillors easily escape from the influence of the parties that they represented in elections. CMC has not yet succeeded in electing the deputy mayors of Chisinau and the chairman of the Council.
