Oleg Horjan and Sergey Mirovici, who are held in jail on the left side of the Nistru, continue the hunger strike on which they went 25 days ago. Even if not much is known about the detention conditions, it is known that the state of health of the two worsened considerably, as a number of civic activists from the Transnistrian region and the lawyer for one of the detainees stated.
In a news conference at IPN, civic activist Gennady Ciorba said the situation of Oleg Horjan and Sergey Mirovici depicts the wrongdoings committed on the lefts side of the Nistru. The two got fabricated criminal cases because they dared to speak in public about these wrongdoings and gave names. “These two men, being behind bars, went on hunger strike in protest at the current human rights situation and asked to allow access for representatives of international organizations. The hunger strike has lasted for 25 days already,” stated Gennady Ciorba.
Horjan and Mirovici asked for meetings with the Ambassadors of Russia and the U.S. and with representatives of the EU, the OSCE and the mass media so as to tell these about the things that happen in the Transnistrian region. “As they have refused to eat during a long period of time, Sergey Mirovici cannot stand up, while Oleg Horjan moves with big difficulty. The lives of the two political periosneers are in danger, but the Transnistrian administration does not take measures to save them,” stated Gennady Ciorba.
Civic activist Nadejda Bondarenco said Oleg Horjan always struggled for human rights, being the only opposition deputy in the so-called supreme soviet. Even if he mounted protests, he obeyed the law as he is a jurist by profession. On June 6, 2018, he was arrested in the meeting hall of the soviet and was later sentenced to four years and a half in jail “for violent behavior against the forces”, but he didn’t do so in reality.
Even if there were no elements of an offense, Oleg Horjan was jailed for being prevented from running in the so-called election in the region. He is supported by the people and the ruling regime is therefore alarmed, stated Nadejda Bondarenco. As to Sergey Mirovici, the activist said this was sentenced to three years in jail “for insulting the president” after taking part in a protest.
Alina Palii, lawyer for Oleg Horjan, said that on June 23, 2020, the Supreme Court of Justice of the Republic of Moldova ruled that Horjan is held illegally and that he was convicted by unconstitutional courts. All the materials of the case were to be sent to the Prosecutor General’s Office for taking measures to set him free. But nothing happened and Horjan continues to be held in jail. The defense asks the constitutional authorities to become involved so that justice is done to these persons.
