Old trees continue to cause victims in Chisinau
The old, dry trees caused new victims and damage in the capital city. The strong wind last week uprooted 84 trees.
Mayor General Dorin Chirtoaca expressed concern about such a situation and asked the deputy mayors in charge and the administration of the Green Spaces Association to reassess the capacity for looking after and supervising the trees so as to allocate the necessary financial resources in 2010, Info-Prim Neo reports.
According to the head of the Green Spaces Association Eliferie Haruta, two persons needed medical assistance and two cars were damaged after a number of trees fell to the ground on June 8 and 12. A person is still in hospital, but is out of danger.
“The strong wind easily uprooted the old trees,” Haruta said. “There are over 2,300 old trees on the major streets of Chisinau that must be cut or trimmed. A total of 8,000 trees must be cut.”
This year, the Association cut 1,109 trees and trimmed 1,388 trees. It can deal with less than half of the old trees a year. A 28 meter-long tower was purchased recently to clear the trees, but it can be used mainly at night.
