Officials and experts unenthusiastic about results of EU’s peer review mission

The mission of European experts will not solve the problems faced by Moldova in its justice sector, said experts invited to the talk show “Moldova live” on the public TV channel “Moldova 1”, IPN reports.

Acting minister of justice Vladimir Cebotari said the success of the justice reform depends on us. “The mission of European jurists is to diagnose the legal system. They daily speak about the problems in justice in our country. We know very well these problems. Everything depends on us. Anyway, this mission is welcome. We are waiting for solutions to be offered to us,” he stated.

Lawyer Ion Cuzun, legal adviser at the Legal Resource Center of Moldova, said the problems of the Moldovan justice sector can be solved only from inside. “During the last five years, the Europeans pumped up enormous sums to reform the Moldovan legal system. Sufficient training was provided for the system’s employees, for prosecutors. I doubt the necessity of this mission. A number of strategies were worked out for reforming the justice sector with the participation of foreign experts. I don’t think this mission will bring something new,” he said.

University professor Pavel Midrigan considers the mission of European experts wasn’t necessary. “The problems existing in the justice sector derive from us. No matter how much money the Europeans offer to us, it’s not enough for us. They give us a piece of bread, but we also want it to be with butter and to be even chewed,” stated the lawyer.

A mission of 50 European justice experts lead by the chief prosecutor of the Romanian National Anticorruption Department Laura Codruţa Kovesi arrived in Chisinau on December 3.
