Official Chisinau asks EU to suspend travel ban on Transnistrian leaders
Deputy Prime Minister for reintegration matters Victor Osipov Thursday announced the new position of the Moldovan authorities on the travel restrictions imposed by the EU on Transnistrian leaders. At a meeting with EU diplomats, Osipov asked that the ban be lifted for a period of six months, but only if the Transnistrian authorities make progress in solving a number of acute problems, including those who made the Council of the EU to impose restrictions, Info-Prim Neo reports, quoting a communique from the Government.
The Moldovan official said that if the projected results are not achieved, in particular the resumption of the political negotiations, solving of the problems encountered by the Romanian language teaching schools, removing of the barriers hindering the officials and diplomats from moving freely, the ban should be reimposed.
Victor Osipov enumerated a number of positive moments, including: holding of informal talks in the 5+2 format in Vienna on November 6 and in Tiraspol on November 9; resumption of the bilateral dialogue aimed at solving the problems faced by the people living on both banks of the Nistru; participation by the Transnistrian militiamen, together with Moldovan police officers, in a seminar organized by the OSCE Mission in Moldova on November 7-9; the agreement to restore the confidence building working groups; allowing the farmers who own land beyond the Rybnitsa-Tiraspol route to cultivate that land, etc.
The proposal to suspend the travel restrictions forms part of the new Moldovan authorities' policy designed to create a favorable atmosphere for addressing the problems faced by the population and stimulating the Transnistrian conflict settlement process.
The European diplomats promised to attentively and quickly analyze the proposal. They said the arguments invoked will be discussed at the meeting of the Moldova-EU Cooperation Council in Brussels next week.
