Ode to Romanian language in central Chisinau

An exhibition dedicated to poet Alexei Mateevici and the Romanian language was mounted in the square before the monument to Ruler Stephan the Great in Chisinau. It contains sequences from the poet’s works and photographs as well as texts about the history of the Romanian language and poems dedicated to the language of the classical and contemporary poets, IPN reports.

“The exhibit invites to a Mateevici itinerary that presents the life and work of the poet,” said Ion Gaina, director of the Museum-House “Alexie Mateevici” situated in Zaim village. The exhibition was staged on the 125th anniversary of the bard’s birth and on the 25th anniversary of the foundation of the Museum-House “Alexie Mateevici”.

Academician Mihai Cimpoi said that Alexei Mateevici devoted the most inspired poem to the Romanian language. The poet was an important cultural figure for this people as he put the Romanian language above everything. “Alexei Mateevici asked the Bessarabian deputies to raise the problem in the State Duma so that ‘we prayed in the Romanian language’. Afterward, at a teachers’ meeting in 1917, Mateevici said the famous phrase: “We don’t have two languages and two literatures. They are the same as over the Prut River,” stated the academician.

Writer and MP Ion Hadarca said the exhibition presents the story of the one who wrote an ode to the Romanian language. “The exhibition is overwhelming and all-inclusive. It is homage rendered to the apostle of the Romanian language. Alexei Mateevici is the poet who guides us on the road to obtaining national identity and dignity,” he stated.

Writer Ion Dabija said he would like more people to read the truth about the Romanian language and to comprehend things as there are many lost people.

The exhibit can be visited until September 7.
