After the candidate for mayor of Chisinau of the Party “Platform Dignity and Truth” Andrei Nastase in the May 20 mayoral elections qualified for the runoffs, it became clear that the government controlled by the Democratic Party together with the Party of Socialists can be changed in the parliamentary elections of this autumn, historian Octavian Ticu was quoted by IPN as saying in the program “Important” on TVC21 channel.
According to the historian, the election results in Balti and Chisinau represent a defeat for the Plahotniuc-Dodon duo. The Socialists lost in Balti and the government lost in Chisinau. “Nastase’s victory in the runoffs can be ensured by the turnout of voters and by a vote given to the right because Ion Ceban does not have where to collect votes from physically. The outcome will probably be 45-47% to 53-55% in favor of Nastase,” stated Octavian Ticu.
However, he said he has two fears – the power could ensure Ion Ceban’s victory at any cost and the fact that Andrei Nastase’s mayoralty will not be at all easy if he wins it. “My general feeling is that the power could be changed in autumn as it should be changed. What is going on at regional and external levels, at our partners and inside our society shows that this failure in Chisinau can lead to the replacement of the power or their will be a collapse,” said the historian.
Octavian Ticu noted he was invited to run in this year’s parliamentary elections, including by the leader of the Party “Action and Solidarity” Maia Sandu. “I haven’t yet decided as I do not know the conditions,” he stated.
According to him, the elections in Chisinau municipality sowed that Andrei Nastase and Maia Sandu have yet to work to become a team. “The elections in Balti showed that they are not yet a team. Moreover, there is the initial hesitation of Maia Sandu, who would have liked to campaign separately, knowing that he has voters who support her. But things ultimately calmed down. I think this formula should be extended nationwide so as to persuade the people that there is an opposition force and this is viable not only for the domestic voters, but also for the foreign partners,” said Octavian Ticu.
