Observers describe electoral campaign as calm, though signal vandalism and attacks

The Coalition “Civic Control – Elections 2009” says that the running electoral campaign “has become one of the calmest and most civilized in recent years,” though even in its last report, it signalizes acts of vandalism and attacks on the participants in the electoral rallies. Leader of this coalition Alexandru Barbov said at a news conference on Thursday, April 2, that he personally doesn’t agree with the advertising clips aired by the Coalition for Free and Fair Elections “Coalition – 2009.” “In these clips, the image is separated into two: CIS is equal to poverty, the European Union is equal to welfare,” Barbov is quoted by Info-Prim Neo as specifying. Referring to the incident of March 30, when PLDM billboards and the Chisinau quarters were sprayed with yellow paint, Alexandru Barbov accuses the son of a candidate on the list of Moldova Noastra Alliance of these acts of vandalism. Asked to specify, Barbov said he found out the “author” from the news of “Omega” and “News Moldova” Agencies. These agencies are known in the journalistic environment as favoring the policies of the Communists Party (PCRM). The Coalition “Civic Control – Elections 2009” states its concern about the incident happening last week-end on the territory of Cantemir district. During a concert supporting the PCRM, a group of people dressed in clothes with the PLDM signs attacked spectators, seriously injuring some of them. However, “despite all the above-mentioned facts, the members of the Coalition “Civic Control – Elections 2009” still believe that the present electoral campaign has become one of the calmest and most civilized in recent years,” reads a release of the observers. On March 5, in one of its reports, the Coalition “Civic Control –Election 2009” ascertained that the PLDM, the PL and the AMN made most deviations from the electoral legislation. These three parties and the PCRM are the only with chances to enter the parliament, according to a recent opinion poll. Some of the violations made by those three center-right parties, highlighted by the coalition, served as reasons to be sued by the PCRM to the Central Election Commission. Alexandru Barbov refused to see coincidences between the PCRM agenda and the agenda of the Coalition “Civic Control –Elections 2009.” “They (PCRM – e.n.) probably used the materials presented by us,” the leader of the coalition said.
