Obituary for illustrious Petru Soltan

Academician and Doctor Habilitate in physical and mathematical sciences Petru Soltan, who died on July 15, remains a model of person who devoted himself to science, culture and patriotic education of the young generation, being also one of the initiators of the national renaissance movement, a prominent public figure and an example for the current and future generations, says an obituary signed by President Nicolae Timofti, Speaker of Parliament Andrian Candu, Prime Minister Pavel Filip and president of the Academy of Sciences of Moldova Gheorghe Duca.

Petru Soltan founded the scientific school “Theory of d-convex multitudes and mathematical applications”. He carried out valuable research in geometry, topology, mathematical cybernetics and applied mathematics, IPN reports.

For his accomplishments, the academician was conferred the title “Emeritus Person” and the highest state award “Order of the Republic”. He is also a laureate of the State Award in Science.

His contribution to developing physical and mathematical sciences was highly appreciated in the country and abroad. He was a member of honor, honorific professor and Doctor Honoris Causa of a number of prestigious universities.

He was a university professor and a member of the Presidium of the Academy of Sciences of Moldova and of Moldova’s first Parliament in 1990–1994.

The academician was buried at the Central Cemetery on Armeneasca St in Chisinau on July 17.
