The number of the stable population of Moldova was 3.567 million by January 1, 2009, according to preliminary data of the National Statistics Bureau. The average annual number in 2008 was 3.570 million people, Info-Prim Neo reports. Out of the number of stable people, 1.475 million live in towns and cities and 2.092 million are rural. 785.4 thousand people, of which 68.5 thousand – in suburbs, were registered in Chisinau on January 1, 2009. Balti City had 148 thousand inhabitants, and the Gagauz autonomy – 159.9 thousand. Most people are registered in districts: Orhei – 125.7 thousand, Cahul – 123.9 thousand, Hancesti – 123.3 thousand, Ungheni – 117.2 thousand and Soroca – 101.1 thousand. A smaller number of inhabitants are in Basarabeasca – 29.5 thousand, Dubasari – 35.2 thousand, Soldanesti – 43.9 thousand, Taraclia – 44.5 thousand, Donduseni – 46 thousand, Rezina – 53.1 thousand, Leova – 53.9 thousand.
