Number of sheep and goats falls by 30%
In the last two years the number of sheep and goats fell from one million to 700,000. Head of the Sheep and Goat Herders Association Pintilie Bulgaru told Info-Prim Neo that the situation is alarming when taking into account that the regress continues from year to year.
Pintilie Bulgaru says that the main factors for the decrease are the shrinking of the external trade market and the high dependency on weather, e.g. the drought in the first half of the summer heavily affected the available quantity of stock-food cereal.
In the meantime, a 10% increase in cheeses and other dairy is expected. Thus, a kilogram of sheep cheese, on average, costs 70 lei, whereas last year in the same period it cost approximately 60 lei. Pintilie Bulgaru pointed out that even higher prices are expected in autumn.
Most of the sheep and goat herding is mainly done in the southern regions of Moldova, especially in districts Vulcanesti, Cahul and Taraclia.
