Number of road accidents on the rise

As many as 854 accidents were recorded on the national roads in the first five months of this year, an increase of 3.6% compared with the corresponding period last year. A number of 113 people died, while over 1,000 were hurt. 86.9% of the accidents occurred through the drivers’ fault.

In a communiqué quoted by IPN, the National Patrolling Inspectorate says that 28.7% of the accidents that happened through the drivers’ fault were due to speeding, poor visibility or unfavorable weather conditions. 21.7% of the accidents occurred because the drivers didn’t give way at intersections.

36.4% of all the accidents involved pedestrians. Jaywalking was the cause of 86 accidents or 27.7% of the total number. Eleven people were killed, while 78 suffered injuries in them.

A number of 109 traffic accidents involved children. They resulted in five deaths.
