The number of prosecutors in Moldova is double the average of the countries of the Council of Europe, while the number of judges is considerably smaller. The data was presented on October 7 in a report made by the Center for Legal Resources of Moldova.

According to the report "Justice in the Republic of Moldova in figures - a comparative examination", there are 720 prosecutor and 504 judge in the Republic of Moldova, while the number of examined cases by magistrates per 1000 inhabitants is 30% lower than that of the CoE member countries.

Additionally, the report shows that, although the 2018 funds directed towards the justice system added up to 1.5% of the state budget, which is above the average of 0.9% of the CoE member countries, the amount is the lowest of all the CoE countries.

The report shows that the number of active lawyers in Moldova is 2.3 times lower than the average of CoE countries, a fact determined by the limited possibility of the population to pay for the services of a lawyer and the limited attention given by the justice system to the lawyers' arguments.

The report also shows that in Moldova the cases are examined in court three times faster than in CoE countries, which, according to the CRJM, affects the quality of carrying out justice.

At the presentation event, State Secretary of the Ministry of Justice, Veronica Mihailov Moraru, said that the report represents an opportunity to analyze the positive and negative aspects of the justice system. "The comparative examination method allows us to draw area specific conclusions, which in turn allows intervention which aims to strengthen the efficiency of justice", said Veronica Mihailov Moraru.
