The popularity of the Romanian language is increasing. A proof is the raising number of those who want to study it, both among Moldovans and among foreigners, director of the Romanian Language House “Nichita Stanescu” Alexandru Bantos has told IPN. A number of 250 persons studied at the Romanian Language House last year. This year the figure is evidently higher even if the exact number if not yet known. There are many persons who want to study Romanian because they need it in the job.
Alexandru Bantos said the opening of the Romanian Language House in 1998 was determined by the poor knowledge of the official language of persons holding responsible positions. Such a state of affairs was established as a result of inspections carried out at companies and institutions in Chisinau.
The people working in the public services sector and trade, a part of the managers of the national army and the police, bookkeepers, jurists and other persons knew the Romanian language inadequately. They didn’t know the specialty terminology and didn’t have skills to write documents in Romanian. The situation in the environment of the Russian language speakers was worse.
According to Alexandru Bantos, when studying Romanian the persons not only learn the official language of the state where they work, but also obtain the possibility of easier integrating into society and assimilating the literature, culture and art of the majority population.
Last year, about 30 representatives of embassies attended Romanian language courses at the Romanian Language House “Nichita Stanescu”.
On the occasion of the National Language Day, the Romanian Language House prepared book launches that will be attended by writers, teachers and high school students.
