Number of liver transplants in Moldova reaches 40

The 40th liver transplant was performed in Moldova. Romanian surgeons assisted in the operation conducted at the National Clinical Hospital “Timofei Mosneaga” in Chisinau. The operation was successful and the patient feels well, IPN reports, with reference to a press release of the medical institution.

According to the head of the Hepatic-Pancreatic Surgery Section, Professor Adrian Hotineanu, the liver was transplanted from a living donor, a man aged 38. The beneficiary was his 35-year-old brother diagnosed with terminal B and D viral liver cirrhosis.

“The patient suffered from a rare anatomical variation - portal vein trifurcation that necessitated a complex vascular reconstruction. It was the first case in our country, the operation being assisted by a team from Romania. This consisted of lecturers Vladislav Brasoveanu and Dragos Zamfirescu, the last being the head of the Association of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery of Romania,” stated Adrian Hotineanu.

Twelve liver transplants were performed at the National Clinical Hospital “Timofei Mosneaga” in 2017 – one from a living donor, while the rest from brain-dead patients. For the first time last year, the medical team of the institution’s Hepatic-Pancreatic Surgery Section performed pediatric oncological hepatic surgery, operating three children.
