Number of liver transplants has halved

The number of liver transplants performed in 2015 decreased twice compared with 2014. Two years ago, there were performed 10 liver transplant operations, but last year only four – two to transplant liver from living donors and two from brain-dead donors. Vice director of the Transplant Agency Grigore Romanciuc has told IPN that more transplant operations were planned initially, but they weren’t possible owing to financial problems.

“The number of liver transplants decreased also because of the problems we faced last year given that the state budget was approved in March only. Money started to be allocated to us in April. We intended to perform more transplants, but didn’t have the necessary financing,” stated Grigore Romanciuc.

The number of cornea transplants fell to 16 in 2015, from 44 in 2014. The number of persons who benefitted from bone grafting decreased from 151 to 26. In 2015, ten persons got new kidneys, the same number as in 2014. The number of ligament transplants rose from three in 2014 to seven in 2015.

In 2015, an increasing number of families refused to have transplants. “Statistics for 2014 show that the refusals represented about 35% of the total number of cases of transplant. In 2015, this figure was about 50%. We hope that next year we will have a lower percentage of refusals,” said Grigore Romanciuc.

Currently, the list of persons waiting for a liver transplant includes 78 persons, while of those waiting for a kidney transplant - 50.
